Gift of Tongues at the Kirtland School of the Prophets (1832)

Both accounts describe the outpouring of the gift of tongues at the School of the Prophets in Kirtland, Ohio. According to Heber C. Kimball’s recollection (dated to September 1832), Brigham Young (accompanied by Joseph Young and Kimball) spoke in tongues; Joseph Smith rose and testified that the manifestation was from God, and the gift then fell upon Joseph Smith himself and he spoke in tongues. In Zebedee Coltrin’s recollection, he was in the translating room at the School of the Prophets when the gift of tongues fell upon him; Joseph Smith entered, blessed Coltrin (“God bless you Brother Coltrin”), urged him to continue, and the gift of tongues and of prophesying rested on the greater part of the brethren present, with speaking in tongues and prophesying continuing through that day and most of the night. Combined, the accounts indicate a single occasion in Kirtland when multiple brethren (including Brigham Young, Zebedee Coltrin, and Joseph Smith) manifested the gift of tongues and prophesying.
