John Mark Hendry, born March 30, 1836 in Perth, Scotland, was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 16 on December 13, 1852 by Walter Muir and confirmed the following day by William Brewerton. His father, Michael Hendry, upon hearing of his son's conversion, called him to his bedside and said, 'John, I know I am going to die, and before I do, I want you to go to Zion, working until you have the family all safe in Zion.' On April 26, 1855, John departed with his family from Liverpool on the sailing vessel 'William Stetson,' embarking on the difficult journey to Salt Lake City with 293 persons in the company. This conversion and migration exemplified his faithfulness to the Restoration.
