Jesse W. Crosby: Diarist, Missionary, and Tireless Servant — One of the Mormon Battalion's Most Documented Witnesses (1820–1888)

Jesse W. Crosby was born October 22, 1820, in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. He converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the early 1840s and gathered with the Saints to Nauvoo. When the Mormon Battalion call came in July 1846, he enlisted in Company B and completed the full 2,000-mile march from Council Bluffs to San Diego.

Crosby was a keeper of records — his journals from both the Battalion period and his subsequent missionary service are among the most detailed personal accounts in the Church History Library. He wrote with precision and spiritual depth, recording not only the physical demands of the march but the spiritual life that sustained it: the blessings given, the prayers offered, the moments when the column pressed forward on faith alone.

After his discharge in July 1847, Crosby settled in Utah. He was called on at least two missions by the Church, serving in the eastern United States and preaching the gospel he had given so much to defend. His missionary journals record specific spiritual experiences: answers to prayer, inspired teaching moments, and the spiritual confirmation that comes to a man who has consecrated himself entirely.

In Utah, he became a respected local Church leader — a man whose peers knew him as someone whose word could be trusted because his life had been consistent. He had marched 2,000 miles as a young man; he spent the next four decades in the same spirit of sacrifice and consecration.

Jesse W. Crosby died in 1888 in Utah. His journals are primary sources for both Mormon Battalion history and early Utah Church history, and his life stands as one of the most complete individual testimonies in the founding generation of the Restoration.
