John Baker: Private, Company D — One of Several Bakers in the Mormon Battalion, Settled in Utah After the March (1820–1880)

John Baker was born around 1820 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company D, completing the march from Council Bluffs to San Diego under the overall command of Lt. Col. Philip St. George Cooke.

Company D was commanded by Captain Nelson Higgins and included among its ranks some of the most dedicated diarists of the Battalion period. Baker was among the soldiers who completed the full march without being assigned to the Sick Detachments at Santa Fe — meaning he endured the most difficult portions of the route, including the Arizona desert crossing and the final push to California.

After his discharge in July 1847, Baker made his way to the Salt Lake Valley. He settled in Utah and raised his family among the Saints, living the post-pioneer life that characterized the majority of Battalion veterans: farming, attending his ward, paying his tithing, and bearing testimony to the experiences of 1846–1847.

The Mormon Battalion roster includes several men named Baker. John Baker's service record is confirmed through the muster rolls recovered by the Mormon Battalion Association from the National Archives — the same records that established the definitive roster of 634 men who served in the Battalion.

His life and service represent the thousands of unnamed faithful who marched without keeping journals, whose individual accounts were not preserved, but whose faith was expressed in the simple, extraordinary act of walking 2,000 miles in obedience to their prophet.
