Jefferson Bailey: Private, Company C — Completed the Battalion March and Lived to See Utah Statehood (1823–1897)

Jefferson Bailey was born in 1823. He joined the Church and gathered with the Saints, enlisting in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and serving in Company C under Captain Jesse D. Hunter.

Company C marched the full route from Council Bluffs through Kansas, New Mexico, Arizona, and into California, arriving in San Diego in late January 1847. Bailey was one of the men who endured the marathon march through the waterless desert of southern Arizona — the crossing that William Coray described as survivable only by 'the unseen hand of Almighty God.'

Bailey was discharged in July 1847 and returned to the Salt Lake Valley. He settled in Utah and raised his family there, living through the transformation of the Great Basin from a wilderness outpost to a functioning territory and eventually a state.

Jefferson Bailey lived until 1897 — long enough to see Utah achieve statehood in 1896, the culmination of the forty-year effort by the Saints to build a civilization in the Rocky Mountains. He had been among the young men whose labor and sacrifice made that civilization possible.

His story is characteristic of the majority of Mormon Battalion soldiers: not a famous officer, not a diarist whose records were preserved, but a faithful private who answered the call, marched the miles, returned home, and spent the rest of his life building the kingdom. The record of his faith is written not in a published journal but in the simple fact of his endurance.
