James Henry Rollins — Wagon Overturn Preserves Joseph Smith's Family (February 1831)

James Henry Rollins recorded that on the first day Joseph Smith arrived in Kirtland (February 1831) he met Joseph at his uncle Sidney Gilbert's house. From the front gate Rollins saw a wagon turn over as it came down a slippery hill and heard a woman and "two or three children" screaming; Rollins identified them as Joseph Smith's family (including Emma Smith and their children). He ran into the house, told Joseph and his uncle, and Joseph—without his hat—ran to assist. Remarkably, despite the dramatic overturning, none of the occupants were injured. Rollins also recorded that, having seen Joseph and Hyrum in vision months earlier (December 1830), this preservation reinforced his conviction of Joseph's prophetic calling.
