Parley P. Pratt in New York City (1837): Healings, Baptisms, and the "Voice of Warning"

After the death of his first wife, Thankful, Parley P. Pratt married Mary Ann Frost (daughter of Aaron Frost of Maine) on May 9, 1837. In 1837, while laboring in New York City (noted in sources as occurring that year and referenced as taking place into the fall), Pratt baptized many converts, including Addison Everett, and recorded that “God manifested his power in many gifts and healings,” which caused the work to spread through the city and surrounding area. During this same ministry Pratt wrote and published the pamphlet Voice of Warning. These events—Pratt’s marriage to Mary Ann Frost, the conversions and baptisms (including Addison Everett), the reported healings of the sick, and the publication of the Voice of Warning—are described in Pratt’s autobiography and in his later history and are presented together here to preserve all concrete details from the original accounts.
