Divine Protection Guides Saints from Persecution at DeWitt

In the fall of 1837, mobbers from the surrounding counties of Ray, Clinton, Lafayette, Jackson, and Daviess rose up against the Saints, determined to drive them from their homes. The Saints who lived at DeWitt on or near the Missouri River were driven from their homes and their full grown fields of corn, and would have been murdered if it had not been that 'the hand of the Lord was over his people for good.' The Prophet Joseph Smith was awake to his duties and went to the welfare of the persecuted Saints with some of his brethren and assisted them and guarded them safely to the city of Far West in Caldwell County, Missouri. This divine protection and Joseph's faithful leadership saved the lives of the Saints during this dark period of persecution.
