George Washington Gill Averett was about nine years old when the missionaries Elisha Graves and Isaac Higbee came to preach the gospel in his community around 1835. He witnessed many miraculous signs including healings and people speaking with new tongues and interpreting them. Seeing and hearing these manifestations of God's power strengthen his faith, young George asked the Lord for healing of a disease he was suffering from. The Lord answered his humble prayer and healed him instantly of the disease. This was the first time he had faith to ask the Lord for such a blessing, and it became a powerful testimony to him of the truth of the Latter-day work.
