Sometime before joining the Orthodox Church in September 1833, Jonathan Crosby had a dream in which some new preachers came with a book containing new doctrine that threw new light on the Bible. Their preaching was different from all others, and in the dream he rejoiced in it greatly. When he awoke, the dream somewhat left him and he thought no more about it. However, shortly after being propounded for admission to the Orthodox Church and feeling a great spiritual burden, on the next Sabbath (late September 1833), he was told by young men in a store that two young preachers with a new book (the Book of Mormon) had come to town and would preach that evening. He attended their meeting and was immediately filled with the Spirit of God as they taught him the restored gospel from the scriptures. The dream had prepared his heart for this miraculous encounter with the true messengers of God. He went home prophesying that night, and his entire spiritual trajectory changed from that moment.
