At a meeting held one evening at the home of Brother Newel K. Whitney in Kirtland, the heavens were opened and the Spirit of God filled the entire house and rested upon all the congregation to overflowing, with even the little children participating in the manifestations. Prophesying and singing the songs of Zion were indulged in until morning. This powerful outpouring of the Holy Ghost was so compelling that Brother Whitney, who had not then yielded obedience to the gospel, was convinced of the truth. He was subsequently baptized into the Church. This miraculous manifestation became a turning point in Whitney's spiritual journey.
