William Hyde Witnesses Angels Administering at the Kirtland Temple Dedication

William Hyde arrived in Kirtland, Ohio in February 1836, having moved his family from New York to gather with the Saints. On March 27, 1836, just weeks after their arrival, he attended the dedication of the Kirtland Temple — the first temple built by the Latter-day Saints in this dispensation.

In his *Private Journal*, Hyde recorded his firsthand testimony of what transpired:

"This was the first Temple built by the Saints of the last days, and the first endowments were given at this conference. This was, by far, the best meeting I had ever attended. The gifts of the gospel were enjoyed in a marvelous manner, and Angels administered unto many."

Hyde was 17 years old at the time, a relatively new member of the Church, and his journal entry is among the many firsthand eyewitness accounts corroborating the extraordinary spiritual manifestations of the Kirtland Temple dedication season — a period in which dozens of participants independently recorded visions, angelic appearances, prophecies, the gift of tongues, and the presence of heavenly fire visible outside the temple.

Hyde's account is notable as an ordinary, non-leadership witness: he was not an apostle or general authority at the time, making his corroboration particularly significant as evidence of the breadth of the spiritual outpouring experienced across the whole congregation.
