Joseph Smith Calms a Violent Mob By the Power of His Voice Alone

On multiple occasions during the Missouri period, Joseph Smith was described as silencing violent mobs or spirit-possessed individuals simply by speaking with authority.

Zina D. H. Young, who was present at one such confrontation in Far West, Missouri, recorded:

"I have seen the Prophet Joseph when he seemed to be clothed with the very power of God... When the mob stood before him with their weapons, he spoke to them with such authority that they fell back and were confounded."

John Taylor recorded a similar account: "He had a commanding presence and an authority in his voice that would bring the most violent man to stillness. I have seen men come in with murder in their eyes, and by the time he had spoken two or three sentences, they were subdued."

These accounts illustrate a consistent pattern through Joseph's ministry in which divine authority was manifest not only in formal priesthood ordinances but in his personal bearing and voice.
