Prior to the dedication of the Nuku'alofa Tonga Temple in 1983, a powerful tropical cyclone was heading directly toward Tonga. Church leaders and members fasted and prayed for the storm to turn away so the dedication could proceed. Remarkably, the cyclone changed course and passed around the island, allowing the dedication to take place as planned.

Members and leaders who were present testified of the divine intervention, seeing it as a direct answer to their collective prayers. The temple was dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley.
