Spencer W. Kimball's Miraculous Recovery
In 1957, Elder Spencer W. Kimball underwent surgery for throat cancer that required the removal of most of his vocal cords. Doctors gave him little hope of ever speaking again, let alone in public ministry. Through priesthood blessings and faith, Kimball recovered and continued to speak — his distinctive soft, raspy voice becoming one of the most recognized in the Church.
He went on to serve as President of the Church from 1973 to 1985, delivering countless addresses and leading the Church through a period of significant growth and the landmark 1978 revelation extending the priesthood to all worthy male members.
